Look at this birthing body at work. A good doula knows how to help birth keep moving (like suggesting the always amazing toilet position), but also knows when to stand back, let you get in the zone and rock your birth. The hardest part of birth can be getting out of our body’s way. The strength in this photo is physical and mental. It’s immeasurable. A doula is there to help remind you of your strength when it feels impossible. We know you can do it. You are doing it.⠀ ⠀ Photography and Doula from Gather Birth Cooperative | Minneapolis, St. Paul Birth Photography + Doula + Postpartum Sessions + Film + more⠀ ⠀ @gatherbirth | gatherbirth.com⠀ ⠀ [image description: A woman sits on a toilet, her pregnant belly bulging with a contraction.

Birth feels BIG. Big in so many ways, but we especially focus on all of the physical aspects we need to prepare for or endure.⠀ .⠀ Our bodies are made to birth. It’s a hormonal process that most of the time will work as designed, if we can just stay out of the way. .⠀ Birth is mental. How do we continuously convince ourselves we are up for the challenge? How do we tell our mind to stay out of our body’s way and let it do the work? How do we tell ourselves to keep going when we want to give up?⠀ .⠀ Preparing our mind and spirit for birth is just as important as preparing ourselves physically. We need to be confident in what we want to achieve, because we will waver, lose hope and feel like we may not be up to the challenge. Tell that voice to eff off.⠀ .⠀ What did you say to yourself to keep going during birth? What did someone say to you that helped you keep pushing?⠀ .⠀ 📷@meredithwestinphotography⠀ .⠀ .⠀ .⠀ .⠀ #birthwithlove #minnesotaborn #birthofamama⠀ @birthbecomesher @birthwithoutfear ⠀ .⠀ #childbirth #birthwithconfidence #birth #birthwithoutfear #empoweredbirthproject #empoweredbirth #positivebirth #birthbecomesher #birthundistrubed #childbirth #normalizebirth #birthmatters #peaceonearthbeginswithpeacefulbirth #birthcenter #carriagehousebirth #motherhooduncensored #strongasamother ⠀ #birthphotographer #birthphotography #birthphotos #mnbirthphotographer #doula #birthdoula #mamahood #motherhoodrising #tribedemama #motherhoodintheraw

February is Black History Month. . While it’s critical to celebrate history, we also need to be looking at the present and what that means for the future, especially for black families. . The United States has the highest maternal mortality rates of any developed nation. It’s a terrifying problem that needs to be addressed. Even more horrifying is that black parents are three to four times more likely to die from pregnancy or birth related causes. That’s more than 250% more likely to become a statistic counted among our nation’s maternal deaths. . How can this be happening? The easy answer is to talk about socioeconomic dynamics, access and education, but that’s a cop out. . A wealthy, college educated black woman is still more likely to die because of pregnancy or birth related complications than a low-income white woman without a college degree. . It’s beyond access, economic status and eduction, it’s about race and the deep-seeded prejudices that effect the way a black birthing person receives prenatal, postpartum and birth care. . These are the important questions we should be digging into this month to ensure that black families have a better chance at their future. . How can we start trying to make it better? Lobbying our legislators for insurance and Medicaid coverage of doulas. Having a constant support presence and advocate is necessary start to help combat maternal deaths. . Recognize Black History Month by calling your representatives and asking them support legislation for Medicaid coverage of doula support. . 📷: @meredithwestinphotography
